About the Choir

We are a community choir based in Newport on the Isle of Wight in the UK. Membership is open to anyone, and there are no auditions for entry. Lots of people fear to join a choir because they think they need to be able to read music, but in our choir many members don’t read music, and we show that such a group of people can still create excellent music.

We rehearse on Monday evenings at Cowes Baptist Church, and have a rotating schedule of rehearsals on Thursday evenings at Bethany Church, Newport. To find out more about joining and membership fees, please send an email to secretary@medinacommunitychoir.org.uk.

The Choir has taken part in many amazing events. In 2010 we performed on the main stage of the Isle of Wight Festival to thousands of people, backing the Sixties legend, Melanie Safka. We also entered the 2010 BBC Radio 3 Choir of the Year competition, taking part in the heats in Basingstoke. During the summer of 2010 we toured several venues in Brittany, France, wowing audiences with our enthusiasm and vocal skills. We have entered local music festivals several times, and have successfully won our category on a number of occasions. In 2011 the Choir performed with Lesley Garrett at the Isle of Arts Festival, and sang at the Polesden Lacy National Trust house in Surrey for their Christmas events. We were asked back to Polesden Lacy for their 2012 Christmas events. In 2012 we took part in a recording led by the The Band of HM Royal Marines Portsmouth, for their album Diamond Jubilee Tribute, which went on to raise over £40,000 for the Royal Navy and Royal Marines Charity. We then joined the Royal Marines Band for a gala concert at Shanklin Theatre in September 2012.

We have two main concerts a year at Medina Theatre, which have sold out for the past four years, with one of the biggest waiting lists for tickets the Theatre has seen for our 2012 Christmas concert. We also perform various other concerts around the Island based on our extensive repertoire. The Choir is also available for wedding hire, for which the size of the Choir can be adapted to requirements.

The Choir was started by Hannah Brear in 2006, for students and parents of Medina High School. Initially, only six or so people turned up each week, and so Hannah opened out membership to anyone on the Island. This brought about immense growth, and now we have over 80 regular members of all ages and backgrounds. Until recently the Choir was called the Medina High Community Choir, but due to changes in the Choir’s structure, we altered our name.
