Due to precautions being taken around the spread of Covid-19, members are being contacted about regular virtual rehearsals on Zoom; and socially-distanced rehearsals where and when possible.
Medina Community Choir is based on the Isle of Wight in the UK. Membership is open to anyone, and there are no auditions for entry. Lots of people feel nervous about joining a choir because they think they need to be able to read music, but in our choir many members don’t read music, and we show that such a group of people can still create excellent music.
The Choir was started by our director, Hannah Brear, in 2006, initially for students and parents of Medina High School. Since then it has evolved into a popular and acclaimed whole-island choir, attracting more than 100 regular members of all ages and backgrounds.
Our repertoire is very varied, from classical to musical theatre, from film favourites to pop, to gospel.
We usually hold concerts at least twice a year on the Isle of Wight, though in 2020 we have had to defer our performances because of Covid19.
In addition, we have been invited to perform at amazing events. For example, in 2019 the choir sang John Rutter's Magnificat at Carnegie Hall, New York, with DCINY (Distinguished Concerts International New York), and in Summer 2019 we performed our gospel repertoire at venues in Normandy, France. We go on tour to France every two years.
Past guest appearances include backing Fatboy Slim at Bestival on the Isle of Wight (2013) and at Common People Festival, Southampton (2015); and backing acclaimed tenor Russell Watson (2016 and 2018).
The choir is also sought-after for weddings.
